November 2011

Marines of the 38th OCC and Basic Class 3-66

10 November 2011 marks the 236th Birthday of our beloved Corps. I want to wish all members of our Class and their families - a very happy Marine Corps Birthday. I hope many of you will be attending some form of Birthday Celebration in your communities this year. Interesting side notes: 2011 markes the 100th Anniversary of Naval Aviation and 2012 is the 100th Anniversary of Marine Air.

This is my last Newsletter as President of your organization. Thanks to a dedicated Board and a hardworking Reunion Committee, we have had two years of success. Thanks to Jack Sheehan we now have two guidons, one for the 38th OCC and one for Basic Class 3-66. The guidons have been passed to your new President, Mike St. Clair and we know he will do an outstanding job leading our organization. Mike was at the top of the Class in both OCS and TBS. With Mike as President and Andy Blenkle as Reunion Chair for 2013, I am sure our next gathering will be as successful as the 2011 edition. A final sincere thank you to all who supported the 2011 Reunion.

Semper Fi,
Sam

2011 Reunion, New Bern, NC: 5-9 Oct

We had a great Reunion at Cherry Point. As most of you know, we lost our host hotel, the New Bern Hilton Riverfront, on 9 Sep, due to extensive damage from Hurricane Irene. Our Aviator friends at Cherry Point stepped up, big time, and provided 76 BOQ rooms, so that 95% of our Classmates could be billeted on Base.

81 Classmates and 60 spouses and guests attended the event. We visited MarSOC, the Marine Special Operations Command at Camp Lejeune; the MV-22 Osprey facilities at MCAS, New River and toured MAG 14 at MCAS Cherry Point with their AV-8B Harriers, EA-6B Prowlers and C-130 Hercules aircraft.

Friday afternoon, 28 Reunion attendees played golf, while 90 others enjoyed a boat cruise on the Crystal Coast Lady out of Beaufort, NC. We had the Biennial "All Hands" Business Meeting on Saturday morning and a wonderful banquet at the new Cherry Point Miller's Landing Club on Saturday evening. I believe everyone had a great time and enjoyed the camaraderie with their Classmates and significant others, thanks to our outstanding Cherry Point hosts.

We had three Marines retire from the Board of Directors of our Corporation this year: Terry Cox, Terry Lewis and Darrell Wells. Those elected to succeed them were: Jim Herak, Steve McComb and Greg Stockstill.

Your elected Officers the next two years are:

  • President - Mike St. Clair
  • Vice President - Pete Clay
  • Secretary - Steve Snyder
  • Treasurer - Chuck Sooter (transitioning to Steve McComb)
  • Sergeant-at-Arms - Tom Howe

The eight (8) additional Member of the Board are:

  • Andy Blenkle (2013 Reunion Chair)
  • Larry Edwards
  • Jim Herak
  • Sam McClinchie
  • Steve McComb
  • Dave Mellon
  • Jack Sheehan
  • Greg Stockstill

The minutes from the Board of Directors meetings on October 5th and 9th as well as those from the General Membership Meeting on October 8th will be reviewed and approved by the Board shortly and then posted on the Class Website (www.usmc-thebasicschool-1966.com)

Missing Classmates

As those who attended the Reunion know, Ron Mikat recently became active in our organization and immediately volunteered to assist in locating "Missing Classmates". Ron has requested that the membership help him in locating the following:

  • Bell, Ben H. (Pensacola)
  • Brahe II, Bruce K. (TBS)
  • Greene, Garrett W. (Pensacola)
  • Gresston, Ronald L. (Pensacola)
  • Hoffman, Howard M. (Former Enlisted - Pensacola)
  • Jones, William D. (TBS)
  • Klatte, E.D. (TBS B-3)
  • Munk, Marcus G. (Pensacola)
  • Ortrowski, Edmund J. (Pensacola)

If you have any information on these 9 Marines (hometown, college, other friends, etc.), please contact Ron Mikat at 518-463-3612 or email him at romeow@nycap.rr.com.

Bereavement

I am saddened to report the passing of one of our Classmates, Wayne "Rex" Bryan, on July 4, 2011. Rex completed OCS with us and went on to Pensacola to become a helicopter pilot. Pat Sirmon notified the Association of Rex's passing at the Reunion. The Bereavement Committee sent a letter to Diane, Rex's wife of 42 years, expressing the sympathy of the class and notifying her that a Memorial Contribution was being made to the "Semper Fi Fund." If you wish to send your condolences on to Diane, she can be reached at the following address:

Diane Bryan
1602 Waters Edge Circle
Shreveport, LA 71106

Additionally, if you learn of a Classmates's death, please notify me at (724)625-8100 or email me at Alex McClinchie ammjm@consolidated.net. If I receive the information promptly enough, I will mobilize some of our Classmates to attend the funeral or memorial service.

2013 Reunion

Work is beginning on the 2013 Reunion. Andy Blenkle has agreed to be the Chair of the 2013 Reunion Committee. In the next couple of months, the balance of the Committee will be formed, the site for the 2013 Reunion will be selected and the Committee will begin the work of putting together the entire program.

2011 Voluntary Dues

As I have mentioned before, the Marine Corps Birthday serves as our kickoff for our annual voluntary dues campaign. These voluntary contributions help fund the organization and provide the funds for our annual Charities Contributions. This year I may not have done an effective job of communicating the importance of this campaign because we find ourselves behind our prior years' collections. If you have not contributed this year and would like to help, we would greatly appreciate it. The various levels of support remain the same:

Nominal - $25
Incentive: Anchor - $50
Globe - $100
Eagle - $150

Again, dues are strictly voluntary and contributions will be recognized on our website. The check should be made out to "38th OCC/BC 3-66 Alumni." Dues payments should be sent to our Treasurer, Steve McComb, at:

Steve McComb
12904 Glenfield Road
Leawood, KS 66209-1745

Lost Item

The BOQ at Cherry Point located an iPod type device in one of the BOQ rooms on the second deck on the wing closest to the River. If you lost such a device, please contact the BOQ Front Desk at (252) 466-5169.

Commando Hall of Honor

I am pleased to report that our Classmate, "Digger" O'Dell was inducted into the U.S. Special Operations Command's 'Commando Hall of Honor' at McDill AFB on 16 May, 2011. Digger was in the 2nd Induction Class and the Program noted his contributions as follows:

"LtCol O'Dell, USMC (Ret), distinguished himself during a lifetime of service to the United States and Special Operations in a myriad of assignments culminating as the Deputy Chief of Staff, Operations, Plans and Communications at the Naval Special Warfare Command, Coronado, CA from 1988 to 1992. LtCol O'Dell's dedication and support to Special Operations Forces spans more than 27 years of training and leading classified operations in Vietnam as a member of the Central Intelligence Agency. His contributions to the Marine Corps Reconnaissance community and to Special Operations are immeasurable and will have a lasting impact on future combat operations."

Congratulations Digger.

Finally

I am saddened to report the passing of two of our classmates: Fred Brown on May 8, 2011 and Calix (Cal) Reneau on June O, 2011. Your Bereavement Chairman sent a letter of condolence to the next of kin and a contribution to their specified charity or organization. May they each rest in peace.

I also must report that Skip Storey and Mike St Clair each recently had successful prostate surgery and are on the mend and plan to join us at our New Bern Reunion. We wish them both a speedy and complete recovery.

Lastly, I am happy to report a new active member to our organization, Ron Mikat, has volunteered to assist in locating 'missing' classmates. Listed below are 10 classmates that Ron is working to locate:

Birbeck, Walter II
Brahe, Bruce II
Evans, James
Green, Garrett W.
Hyland, Michael
Jones, William
Klatte, Edward
Murphy, Joseph
Norton, Gary A.
Wynn, James (under active)

MOS, College, Marine Schools Attended, Close Friends, Company Worked For, Address, Hometown, State, Wife's Name, Phone Number, Email Address, OCS Platoon, TBS Platoon, and Pensacola (Flight School).

If you have any information on these 10 Marines, please send it to Ron at romeow@nycap.rr.com. Thank you for your help.

Best wishes to you and your families.

We now have photos for all 16 OCC Platoons; however, only four platoons have complete listings of everyone in that platoon. If any platoon member, or team of members, would like to take on the project of identifying the Marines in their platoon photo, we would really appreciate it. Please contact Dave or Terry so that they can coordinate this project, and thank you for volunteering.

There is a section on our site dedicated to our KIA Classmates. As you will see, various people have written comments and memories regarding our fallen Classmates. If you have comments you would like to share about any of these Marines, please forward them to Dave or Terry, so they can be added to their respective profile.

One last item, please check out the pictures from our 2009 Reunion in San Diego. Terry Cox did a great job, as our duty 'photog', and you can expand any single picture by clicking on it. Marines of the 38th OCC and Basic Class 3-66

Marines,

Your Board of Directors and Reunion Committee wish all members of our Class and their families the very best as we head into Spring and look forward to an enjoyable Summer. Most of us have experienced some violent weather this Winter and early Spring, so let's hope that is all behind us. We hope we can schedule good weather for our October Reunion in New Bern.

2011 Reunion, New Bern, NC: 5-9 Oct

Our Reunion is now less than 6 months away. Your Reunion Committee continues to fine tune the "Training Schedule" for the four day event. All of you should have received one or more phone calls from your respective "Platoon Captains" encouraging you to register for the upcoming event.

It is important for you to register as early as possible (34 Classmates have already registered) for a number of reasons. Airfares will continue to increase as we get closer to October. We need to have accurate numbers for the events scheduled on Friday afternoon, 7 Oct, so that we can arrange transportation, lunch, etc. Lastly, New Bern has their annual Mum Festival on the weekend of our Reunion and it will be worth visiting, but at the same time our Reunion Hotel, the Hilton Riverfront, will have many reservations for that festival. So please, make your reservations early.

Here is the link for the Mum Festival: www.mumfest.com

Additional News

Marines' Memorial Club and Hotel: This is a great place to stay if you are visiting San Francisco. The Club and Hotel is just off Union Square. Two of our own Classmates are new Officers and Board Members for 2011. Steve Snyder is back on the Board as Vice Chairman and Len Torres is a new Board Member. Our Class is certainly well represented at this fine institution.

I received a request from Joe Hancharick regarding information about his TBS roommate, Forrest Goodwin, who was one of our KIA Classmates. Forrest had a nephew, David Goodwin, who is trying to learn more about his uncle beyond the fact that he was killed near Con Thien on 2 Mar '67. If anyone has any info on Forrest they would like to share with David, contact him at [davegoodwin1@verizon.net]. Please cc Joe at [joeh@va.metrocast.net] on any info you send David. Also Joe is certain David and his family would like to see any pictures classmates may have of his uncle.

I regret to report, belatedly, the passing of another Classmate, John W. Stone. Mike St.Clair reported that John died from complications following heart transplant surgery on August 10, 2010. Our Class made a Memorial Contribution in John's memory to the Zion Lutheran Church in Spring City, PA. John and his wife, Patricia, were married 45 years and John was a teacher, coach and athletic director in the Upper Marion School District for 35 years. A Memorial Service, with full Military Honors, was held on August 16, 2010.

Rick Cleland reported recently that his TBS Platoon Commander, Larry McLaughlin (LtCol), passed away on January 2, 2011 at the age of 72. Larry served in the Marine Corps for 20 years and later worked 22 years at Kirby High School in Memphis,TN teaching and coaching football, basketball and track. Larry is survived by his wife of 51 years, Datch, three sons and two granddaughters.

I am sorry to be ending this newsletter with thoughts reflecting our mortality, but the reality is: we are not getting any younger and since we cannot predict the future, we should try to get together this October in New Bern.

Best wishes to you and your families.

Semper Fidelis,
Sam
