Carlsson, Carl

Deceased: Born 10-31-1941 Passed 9-20-2021 Carl Carlsson, born October 31, 1941, in South Gate, CA, peacefully passed away on September 20, 2021, at the age of 79 in Edgewater, FL. He is survived by his two daughters, Analisa Tarantino and Erica Carlsson; two grandchildren Grace and Paul Tarantino; and his sister, Carol May. Carl was a Marine, entrepreneur, polyglot, world traveler, and, most proudly to him, a loving father. Carl lived a life that was fiercely independent and ambitious, tempered by his big heart and generosity. He had a full, exciting life, full of adventures and challenges. He loved the surf, skiing, tending the earth, socializing, and traveling. Many say that if you added up all his life experiences, he would be double his age! As a boy, he was mature beyond his years. He pursued endeavors such as collecting metal door to door for the WW2 war effort and riding the “red cars” downtown by himself to go see the opera. He was an avid boy scout for several years and fondly enjoyed his time at the boy scout jamboree in Irvine Ranch before it was developed. As a teenager, he decided to focus on a future career in the navy and started a Sea Scout group. He collected old navy uniforms for the boys and even built a sailboat with the club. He graduated from California High School in Whittier, CA in 1959. At California High, he competed in wrestling, varsity track, gymnastics, and water polo. He also studied Spanish and went on to stay in Spain in the 1960s to hone his craft. He aspired to follow in his father’s footsteps and become a Navy officer by attending The United States Naval Academy. However, fate had different plans. After attending a local community college, Carl attended both the University of Utah and Brigham Young University and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Government in 1965. In 1961, Carl traveled to Hong Kong for his LDS mission. There he added Cantonese to his language skill set. This experience forever shaped his passion for international travel. Carl was dedicated to higher education. After completing his undergrad education, he started a Ph.D. Fulbright program at Yale studying Asian languages in 1965. However, his time at Yale was cut short as he was called into active duty to serve as a combat Marine in Vietnam in the DMZ in 1966 and Japan in 1970. In 1969, he married Joan Gillis; their relationship lasted 25 years. They lived in several places across the world while Carl served in both active and the Marine Corps reserves. He also served as a sheriff in both St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana, and Spotsylvania, Virginia. He continued his education while serving in the reserves. He studied at Thunderbird School of Global Management in 1971-1972 and a Master of Arts in Urban Studies from George Washington University in 1975. He also taught as an adjunct professor at Pepperdine University in 1978. Starting in 1981, Joan and Carl raised two daughters in Spotsylvania, VA where Carl managed a Christmas tree farm on the weekends and cared for horses as a gentleman farmer. Carl had a passion for nature and farming and went on to create a permaculture heaven at his home in Palm Harbor, FL in the 2000s. He grew papayas and bananas, which he would take to a local nunnery in the neighborhood. Carl spent much of the middle years of his life managing real estate development for McDonald's and Pizza Hut. He consulted internationally in restaurant and real estate development for franchise businesses including restaurants and fitness centers with Franchise Business USA. Additionally, in the 1990s he worked as a security consultant for a corporate Russian security company. He started PrimeSitesUSA in 1988 but in the 1990s he became one of the first Real Estate companies to list their properties online. This shift helped him grow his business to the success it was in the 2000s. Carl remained the managing director at PrimeSites until he passed. With his company, he lived in Costa Rica, where he made several business and personal connections. He was passionate about his work but more importantly his agents. He both partnered with experts and trained mentees during his time in real estate and those relationships lasted him his lifetime. While his work often took him around the world, his heart was always with his girls. He shared the Marine way with them, instilling in them loyalty and discipline at an early age and imbuing in his girls a love of international culture and travel. Throughout Carl’s life, he had a big heart to share with others. He would give the shirt off his back and would open his home to friends and family in need. He was forever optimistic about new enterprises. Carl never gave up on dreaming and creating. Carl’s big dreams and big heart, having been so strongly emblazoned upon his family and friends, will carry on for generations to come. Carl’s funeral will take place at Prairie Creek Cemetery at 11:00 am on Saturday, October 9, 2021, with a reception to follow. OCS: A-1
