Giddings, David Lloyd

Deceased: David Lloyd Giddings of Eagar, Arizona passed away unexpectedly, Sunday, February 21, 2016 in Springerville, Arizona. He was born in Syracuse, New York, December 17, 1943 to Lloyd Elmer and Lilly Valjean Joslyn Giddings. David grew up in Ellisburg, New York as a very active youth with his three siblings. He graduated from Belleville High School in 1961 as a three sport athlete and with a passion for sports and education. He then went on to earn a B.S. in Education/Physical Education at SUNY at Brockport, New York in 1965 and a Masters in Education at the University of Arizona in 1972. David went through the ROTC program and entered the Marines as an officer in 1965. He served two combat tours in Vietnam and was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal and Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, both with combat “V” for performance in action. He was honorably discharged in 1971 as a Captain and moved to Arizona with his wife and 2 year old son. Anyone that spent any time with David knows how proud he was to serve our country and he took special pride that he did this as a Marine. David spent most of his 40+ years in the workforce in the education field including Teacher, Coach, Vice Principal, Principal, Headmaster, Director of Admissions, Director of Studies and most recently as Chief Deputy at Apache County Schools. David spent many hours on the golf course in leagues and tournaments, but also enjoyed spending time on the course in casual matches with his family and friends. His passion for sports pushed him toward umpiring/refereeing, which he still dabbled in until just a few years ago. David is survived by his wife, Susan, his stepdaughter, Annette and her husband Ralph and two grandsons, Ralph and James, his son, Phillip and his wife Nicole and three grandsons, Troy, Carson and Ryan and a granddaughter, Kendall. Glover, Richard Dick

Deceased: Beloved uncle, coach, teacher, Marine, and friend, Richard Colburn Glover, passed away peacefully at his home on May 29, 2024. He was born in Richmond, VA, on June 27, 1942. He was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Marie Glover; and sister, Anne Katherine Fisher, and her husband, Richard Fisher. He is survived by many loving nieces and nephews and their families. Dick attended Woodberry Forest School and graduated in 1961. In his first year at WFS, he accumulated so many demerits that his faculty advisor and eventual lifelong mentor, John Stillwell, suggested that he try wrestling which led to a lifelong passion for the sport. He also played football and tennis at WFS. After graduating from WFS, he went to Wabash College. While at Wabash Dick lettered in football, wrestling, and tennis. After graduating from Wabash in 1965, Dick served in the U. S. Marine Corps for six years reaching the rank of Captain and serving as a helicopter pilot in Vietnam, where he won the Distinguished Flying Cross for gallantry in aerial flight. He earned a master's degree in education from the University of Virginia. He taught history and coached wrestling and football, first, at Blue Ridge School and then at Woodberry Forest School until he retired in June of 2005. His wrestling teams won 535 dual matches, 25 league championships, 13 state championships, and a National Prep Championship. His football teams were undefeated 11 out of the 35 years he coached. Woodberry Forest School awarded Dick the George O'Conner Prize for Excellence in Teaching in 2003, the Distinguished Service Award in 2005, and named the fitness center after him in 2002. Dick received a commendation from the Virginia House of Delegates in 1999 and was elected to the National Wrestling Hall of Fame (Virginia Chapter) in 2003. Dick was elected to the Wabash College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1992 and later received the Alumni Award of Merit in 2002. He received the inaugural Dick Glover Lifetime Achievement Award from the Virginia Wrestling Association in 2015. In 1996, Dick was diagnosed with Kennedy's disease, a progressive neuromuscular condition. Despite ever-increasing limitations to his mobility and strength, Dick carried on for a number of years with his teaching and coaching. By the end of the 2005 school year, however, his condition had advanced to a point where he needed to retire. Even with this disorder, Dick maintained his positive attitude and sense of humor. He never allowed his condition to get the better of him. Appreciation is expressed to Marsha and Etta from Gentiva Hospice, Liz Albrecht, neighbors, and friends from WFS who were so attentive to his needs. Dick always treasured seeing his former athletes, students, and colleagues from WFS. OCS: A-2

Goodrum, Lance A.

Deceased:The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain Lance Allen Goodrum (MCSN: 0-93140), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Pilot with Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron ONE HUNDRED SIXTY-FOUR (HMM-164), Marine Aircraft Group Sixteen, First Marine Aircraft Wing in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 5 November 1968, Captain Goodrum launched as Section Leader of a flight of two CH-46 transport assigned a medical evacuation mission in support of a heavily engaged Marine unit on a mountainside northwest of DaNang. Arriving over the designated area and unhesitatingly beginning his approach, he received hostile automatic weapons fire from enemy emplacements located fifty meters from the landing zone, causing severe battle damage to his helicopter and forcing him to temporarily abort the attempt. After gunships had fired upon the enemy position, Captain Goodrum executed a second approach and again, came under a heavy volume of hostile fire. Resolutely determined to complete the mission, he steadfastly maintained his helicopter in a dangerously exposed position over the area while attempting to pinpoint the exact location of the landing zone until additional battle damage and the intensity of the enemy fire required an immediate departure. Sincerely concerned for the welfare of the casualty on the ground, he boldly commenced a third approach and was subjected to a heavy volume of hostile fire which penetrated the cabin in several places causing considerable damage to the aircraft and severely injuring the crew chief. Unable to continue the mission and with many of his vital navigational aids inoperable, he skillfully maneuvered his severely disabled helicopter from the hazardous area to the hospital at the DaNang Air Base where he delivered his wounded crew chief. By his courage, superb aeronautical ability and unwavering devotion to duty at great personal risk, Captain Goodrum upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
