Deceased:Steven Miller Hinds, 81, passed away on June 26, 2025, in Long Beach, California – the same city where his story began on December 1, 1943.
Steve grew up in the San Fernando Valley before moving to Big Pine, CA, as a teenager to help his family run the Big Pine Resort. At Big Pine High School, he shined both academically and athletically – an All-American football player, varsity basketball standout, and member of the Honor Society. His hard work and determination earned him a football scholarship to the University of Washington, where he played for the Huskies and competed in the Rose Bowl. While there, he joined the Navy ROTC, a decision that set the course for his life of service.
Upon graduation, Steve chose duty over personal ambition – even turning down an opportunity with the Dallas Cowboys – to join the United States Marine Corps. He went on to serve 30 years with courage, loyalty, and distinction. Steve completed two combat tours in Vietnam and was awarded medals for his service, including the Bronze Star with "V" for valor. Beyond the battlefield, he cared deeply about his fellow Marines and their families. He developed the Marine Corps Family Assistance Program and later served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Navy, leaving a legacy of service and compassion that impacted countless lives.
After retiring from the Marines, Steve returned to Long Beach and worked as an administrator at California State University, Long Beach. Known for his intelligence, humor, and steady presence, he earned respect in every circle he entered. He also gave back to his community in meaningful ways. He was proud to be part of Leadership Long Beach, where he continued his lifelong commitment to service and civic growth. Every holiday season, he brought joy to the city by donning the red suit and playing Santa Claus in the Long Beach parade, a tradition that delighted children and families for years.
But above all, Steve's greatest pride was his family. To them, he was more than a husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather – he was the heart of the family, the steady presence whose love and loyalty held everyone together. He is survived by his devoted wife of 44 years, Mary Hancock Hinds; his children, Chandra Hinds and Steven Hinds; his grandchildren, Jocelyn Yarbrough, Logyn Brown, Devyn Wagner, and Zoe Yarbrough; and his great-grandson, Harvey Hinds Wagner. He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard Thomas "Bud" Hinds and Jaqueline "Jackie" Miller Hinds, his sister, Sue, and his stepson, Ross Miho.
Steve lived a full and vibrant life. After retirement, he loved to golf, fish, and cheer on his favorite football teams. He had a mischievous sense of humor and a playful spirit – his favorite song, Surfin' Bird by The Trashmen, will forever bring a smile to those who loved him.
His legacy is one of loyalty, sacrifice, and devotion. Steve gave his all to his country, his community, and most importantly, his family. He will be remembered as a man of honor, heart, and unshakable love – a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, Marine, and friend whose presence will be deeply missed and never forgotten.
