Marines of the 38th OCC and Basic Class 3-66

Marines and Friends,

Attention on deck, the ‘Word’ is about to be passed. No scuttlebutt, just straight scoop. But, because I'm having a bit of difficulty coming up with what I want to say, let me start with some words from others.

Steve McComb, our illustrious Treasurer, reminds us that this year (2019), in order to better align our fiscal year with actual spending, we are changing our fiscal year to coincide with the calendar year. In the past, our fiscal year has run from November 10 of one year through November 9 of the next year. We are now transitioning to a new fiscal year which will begin on January 1 and end on December 31 of the same calendar year.

Therefore, voluntary contributions will be recognized on a calendar year basis also. Any voluntary contribution received before January 1 will be held and deposited after the start of the year.

Please send voluntary contributions for 2019 to:
Steve McComb
2096 Pharr Court South, SW
Unit N3
Atlanta, GA 30305-2188

Our esteemed Mr.Vice, Jim Herak, offers the following: "Marines, as you are aware, Lonnie Myers in response to queries at our last reunion, investigated the possibility of conducting the 2021 Reunion in San Francisco at the Marines' Memorial Club. While there is substantial interest in the site, the major drawback is the room rate, especially if one is not a member of the Club. I have spoken to Lonnie concerning this matter and he is willing to help in any way to develop a plan to schedule the event there. I have also raised the issue with Steve Snyder since he lives in the San Francisco area and is currently on the Board of the Club although his term will be completed this year. Steve believes the solution to the room rate issue may be in purchasing a membership at $200 by each attendee in order to receive a complimentary free night stay and then use the membership to reduce the room rate to the current rate of about $190 per night. Also Steve was asked by the Club Director if scheduling the event in June would be possible in order to receive a reduced room rate. These issues will require further attention, which Steve has agreed to provide. Obviously, there are additional points that need to be addressed, i.e. hospitality suite, banquet room and the 'beverage' concession.I am in favor of pursuing this venue until a deal breaker would make it impossible to conduct the reunion on a reasonable cost basis. In the meantime, a survey to determine membership interest in this venue and of the possibility of scheduling the reunion in June, 2021 seems in order."

Brothers, please submit your comments regarding the foregoingto myself at whflynnjr@comcast.net

As I typed Jim's comments, I saw that they provided me the perfect segue...to the 2019 Reunion. Jack Sheehan and Larry Akercontinue to lead a fantastic committee with significant efforts from Paul Ross, Ron Mikat, Renata Aker and the other not to be outdone distaff members. All the long term planning is done save for arranging for a guest speaker for the banquet. All the contracts are let. Only the possibilities of minor annual vendor cost increases linger on the horizon.

If it has not happened already, all the information you need or could want will soon be on the website. On the home page, look for links to the Reunion Schedule, the 2019 Reunion Registration Form and Info on Newport, RI and Key Attractions and Restaurants in the area. Several points need to be highlighted:

  • First, the registration fee is $155 payable to the 38th OCC / BC 3-66 Alumni. A check in that amount along with the completed registration form needs be sent to Walt Flynn, 9 Regina Road, Weymouth, MA 02188 no later than July 12, 2019.
  • Second, hotel reservations need be made at the Cambria Hotel and Suites by calling 401-236-2020 using code "38OCC" or online at www.cambrianewport.com using code "3OC". The room rate is $109 plus 13.0% tax. Additionally, breakfast can be included at a cost of $15 per person per day. It is suggested that you reserve your rooms early. If your plans are tentative, still make the reservations; it's easier to cancel reservations than try to make them at the last minute. The cutoff date for reservations is September 1, 2019.
  • Thirdly, I am assuming the administration functions for the reunion from Terry Cox. I can be reached by phone at (Home) 781-335-7363, by (Cell) 617-974-8199 and email at whflynnjr@comcast.net.

Surely, the most significant aspect of the 2019 Reunion is that we will be joined by many of our brothers from the 39th OCC / BC 4-66. Within the past week Jack Sheehan added over 120 of their email addresses to our Constant Contact account. Jack asks that each of you update your personal information in the website and provide anything that might help us locate other members of either class. Ron Mikat is focusing on finding lost members of the 38th OCC/BC 3-66 and Jack is working on the 39th OCC/BC4-66.

The foregoing was composed in the cumulative afterthought narrative style.

The following not so. As we perform the intricate dance steps of life in this the midst of the most reflective period of our year, our minds and hearts are tugged at unmercifully and we hope that Thanksgiving comforts us, or at least camouflages the darker aspects of life. We rejoice when our sick recover or at least hold illness at bay for a while longer. We rejoice that the consuming fire and flood only destroy the vegetation and our safety and memories are not.

Brothers, with my assumption of Andy Blenkle's bereavement responsibilities, I have have been forced to face all too frequently our frailties and the time in our lives when those frailties force us to succumb. The Classmate deaths that have been reported since my last President's Newsletter (some rather dated) are included in the next section.

I pray daily for each of you and I look forward to the next time that I will see you. Hold your loved ones tight and when next we meet, hold my hand firmly. You have done much for your country and Corps.

Semper Fidelis.
Walt

Marines of the 38th OCC and Basic Class 3-66

Marines and Friends,

The 2019 Reunion Committee (Newport, RI) continues their planning. I will have more information on the detailed events of the Reunion available after the next planning session which will occur in December 2018.

Meanwhile, I would like to pass along some Class information. Please see the sections below.

In reviewing our directory entries, we have learned of the passing of numerous Classmates, which have not be reported earlier. We are using this issue to pass along the information we have, some of which goes back years. If you know of a Classmate's passing, please pass it along to me, so Our Class can honor his passing in our Newsletter and with an honorarium to his preferred charity.

You will also notice that Chuck Sooter has renewed his appeals for your Vietnam Stories.

I have added a section entitled "Sea Stories and Scuttlebutt". I think you may find the items there interesting!

Again, please save the dates of October 7 - 11, on your 2019 calendar and plan to join us for a terrific Reunion!

Look for the next Newsletter in December after the Reunion Committee meets again and further refines the plans for the 2019 Reunion!

Needed - Your Stories for the Website

The "Our Stories" header is now found on the menu bar of the website. There are currently eleven stories posted and increase of one since the last Newsletter. We hope you will be motivated to write yours and submit it. Go to the Class website to see the new section

Chuck Sooter reminds us to not let our war stories die when we do. Write them now before you're too old to remember them. Not only do your classmates want to read your Vietnam stories, but more importantly, you will leave them for posterity so that your kids and grandkids can read them. Go to our class website (see link above) and check out the the stories already written by your fellow classmates. Who knows, if we get enough of our classmates to write their stories, we may attempt to publish them in book form. At present, the plan is to capture our collective stories on the website, and then, we'll see where it goes from there. So write your Marine Corps story and send it along with any related pictures electronically to Chuck Sooter at chucksooter@hotmail.com. Chuck will assist with editing and get them posted.

Ideally your story will be 6 -10 pages, so this means that you can string a number of related stories together, including pictures of yourself/events back in the day, to form a sense of what your military experience was like for you. Please send whatever you write, regardless. Just get it down on paper. Some other guidelines are as follows: 1) Non-fiction, first person account, 2) No disrespect for others, the Corps, or Country, and 3) Non-political.

Thank you for helping to document the service of our Class.

Sea Stories and Scuttlebutt

The names of all those members of the 5th Marines and 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines (now a battalion in the 5th Marine Regiment) who died in Vietnam are inscribed on the impressive granite panels. Classmate Mike Joseph and his lifelong friend, Steve Colwell, were instrumental in the project.

Camp Pendleton - At the 1st Marine Division Headquarters Building a formation on the morning of April 24, 2018, exactly 51 years to the day from when he gave his life, 1st Lt Philip H. Sauer was posthumously awarded the Silver Star. You may view some videos recorded that day by clicking on the links below:

August 2018

Marines of the 38th OCC and Basic Class 3-66

Marines and Friends,

Mary Blenkle writes: "It is with deep sadness that I inform you that Andy died, yesterday, 8/24/18 at 1510, at home with hospice help.

His cancer spread so rapidly that within his last 24 hours he went from ok, resting during the day, to his last six hours relatively comfortable, but dying. At no time was he in pain which is a huge consolation.

Funeral services will be in Mission Viejo, this week with burial at Ascension Cemetery in Lake Forest and I will let you know arrangements when they are finalized."

On 8/22, Andy emailed the following:

"Some unpleasant news.
I have two types of cancer, a type of leukemia and a melanoma with lesions on my lungs and liver.
I've been dealing with the leukemia for about 2 years.
The melanoma kicked in suddenly.
I had a PET/CT body scan about 4 weeks ago; that's when the melanoma was discovered.
My treatment of leukemia will be suspended so the melanoma can be treated.
My cancers can not be cured; only be stabilized.
My longevity is dependent on the success of the treatment."

Andy's passing has left a huge hole in our class. He played such an important part in all that we did. His gentle spirit, his sincere friendship, and his loyalty to the class and each of us in it will not be forgotten. Andy epitomized all that was and is Marine. Our shared sympathies go out to Mary, Andrew, Matt, Patrick and Sean.

Rest in peace good and faithful servant.

Semper Fidelis.
Walt

July 2018

Marines of the 38th OCC and Basic Class 3-66

Marines and Friends,

It's been a while since I last wrote and brought you up to date on what was happening in our little corporation. Our Fiscal Year 2017 ended on 17 November 2017. Financially, we saw an ending balance of $23,365. That reflected an opening balance of $14,770, $13,595 in member voluntary contributions which included $2,365 from Basic Class 4-66, and $5,490 in reunion revenues. Significant expenses included $7,000 in charity donations to the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation (MCSF) and the Marine Semper Fi Fund, and $12,443 for the San Antonio reunion. Based on the level of our funds at the end of the fiscal year we decided to increase our contributions to the Semper Fi Fund by $2,000 to a total of $9,000. That amount was then matched by the Bob and Renee Parsons Foundation doubling the value of our contribution to $18,000. You might want to look up the MCSF, Semper Fi Fund, and the Parsons Foundation websites to gain a greater understanding of the support they provide to Marines.

In my last letter I commented on the San Antonio reunion, and what a reunion it was. Andy and his crew did yeoman-like work, setting the bar even higher for the future. Shortly into Fiscal Year 2018, Jack Sheehan and Larry Aker stepped forward and accepted the challenge to co-chair the 2019 Reunion Committee which consists of the following. In addition, Jim Herak is being kept abreast of all of the Committee's activities and decisions.

If you scrutinized the financial figures above, you would have noted BC 4-66's contribution to our class. They were having difficulty with developing organization and interest. Jack Sheehan, Ron Mikat, Robby Robinson, and Wally Dixon have since made a significant push to involve 4-66 members in our 2019 reunion and to flesh out their membership data so it can be included in our database and on our website. We are also continuing the search for our own class members. Ron Mikat (518-463-3612) is trying to locate the following. Any help (home state, city, school attended, MOS etc.) would be welcome.
